In 2008 the National Math Advisory Panel (NMAP) issued a report in which it identified important components of effective mathematics instruction, including whole numbers, fractions, and particular aspects of geometry and measurement. The Common Core State Standards (2010) further elaborated on these instructional areas.
In order to help teachers understand and select the best instruction and intervention for their students, there are articles in the FastBridge Knowledge Base about each of the seven math domains, as well as accompanying resources that explain best practices in teaching the related skills. As shown in the above graphic, the three foundational skills are essential for overall mathematics proficiency. Mastery of Number Sense, Whole Number Operations, and Rational Numbers is necessary in order to utilize mathematics in all aspects of life. The next grouping includes the Applied skills of Measurement and Geometry. Effective Measurement and Geometry applications require mastery of the Foundational Skills, thus appearing above those in the graphic. Finally, the Advanced Skills include Algebra as well as Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability. These too depend on mastery of all the underlying skills. This organizational structure is designed to help teachers make sense of what instruction and intervention students need to be successful and proficient with mathematics.
