This lesson walks through the three different methods for creating non-teaching staff accounts for districts that roster FastBridge through ClassLink with a OneRoster API connection.
Before You Begin
Required Permissions: Master Account Administrator or District Manager role
There are three methods for creating non-teaching staff accounts for districts that roster FastBridge through ClassLink with a OneRoster API connection. The most common method is accessing User Role Mapping in FastBridge, and mapping the OneRoster Non-Teaching Staff Role field. A less common method is User Role Mapping the metadata Position field in FastBridge. Lastly, if no User Role Mapping is set up for non-teaching staff users, or a manual login account is required, non-teaching staff accounts can be created manually in FastBridge.
Both User Role Mapping options require that Non-Teaching Staff Users in ClassLink be shared with FastBridge. To edit ClassLink permissions to share these roles with FastBridge, view the Set Up Permissions section of the ClassLink article, Adding Applications & Modifying Permissions.
While setting up non-teaching staff accounts through ClassLink, note that dual FastBridge user role creation from one account in ClassLink/OneRoster isn't supported in FastBridge. That is, a user cannot be shared in ClassLink with a OneRoster User Role of both teacher and administrator, for example, and have both a teaching and non-teaching staff account created in FastBridge. Instead, the teacher role will take precedence, and a manual login account for the non-teaching staff account in FastBridge would need to be created.
User Role Map OneRoster Non-Teaching Staff Role Field in FastBridge
This method cannot be used in combination with User Role Mapping the ClassLink metadata Position title field.
FastBridge can import the following non-teaching staff user roles from OneRoster: administrator, aide, and proctor.
- Select the District Manager tab.
- Select District Preferences.
- Select User Role Mapping.
- Select Add Row to begin mapping a new User Role.
- The trashcan icon can be used to delete any unneeded rows.
- Use the dropdown menu to select a FAST User Role. The non-teaching staff user roles include District Manager, School Manager, Specialist, and Group Proctor.
When considering a School Manager role assignment, FastBridge generally recommends using the Specialist user role instead. There is no difference in FastBridge functionality between the roles when rostering via the OneRoster API; however, the Specialist user role can be assigned to more than one school, and the School Manager role is intended for a single school assignment only. To learn more about FastBridge user roles, take a look at User Roles (Account Types).
- Enter a OneRoster non-teaching staff user role (administrator, aide, or proctor) into the API Title field. Multiple OneRoster user roles can be added to the same FastBridge user role by listing the OneRoster user roles, separated by a comma.
- Once a row has been added for each intended FastBridge non-teaching staff user role, select Submit.
- The non-teaching staff accounts will be imported into FastBridge during the next nightly sync from ClassLink.
Do not edit or delete the mappings for Classroom User or Student User. These mappings must remain as-is to allow student rostering to sync nightly. Altering these mappings will result in nightly roster failure.
User Role Map Metadata Position & Title Field in FastBridge
This method cannot be used in combination with User Role Mapping the ClassLink OneRoster role field.
- This option requires the metadata Position field in ClassLink to be shared with FastBridge. The titles provided in the ClassLink Position field can be the desired FastBridge Non-Teaching Staff User Role, or a title meaningful to the district. The screenshot above displays an example of the metadata Position field being shared with FastBridge in ClassLink.
- Enter the ClassLink metadata Position title into the API Title field. Multiple metadata Position titles can be added to the same FastBridge user role by listing the metadata Position titles, separated by a comma.
Manually Create Non-Teaching Staff Accounts in FastBridge
If no User Role Mapping is set up for non-teaching staff users, or a manual login account is required, such as for a user that has both teaching and non-teaching roles, non-teaching staff accounts can be created manually in FastBridge. Take a look at Adding User Accounts to learn more about how to manually create user roles in FastBridge.
Users created manually within FastBridge will log into FastBridge at https://auth.fastbridge.org/login.do using the username and password set up at the time of account creation.
