The Screening to Intervention (s2i) report for reading includes a column with estimates of student reading levels based on other reading programs and scales. By linking FastBridge adaptive reading (aReading) scaled scores and earlyReading composite scores to other familiar scales, this report provides educators with another tool to aid in the interpretation of FastBridge reading assessment results.
Among the 10 estimated reading levels available in the s2i report, six are reading scales and four are developmental reading programs. These estimates can help to identify a starting point in the available reading programs, and the links to other popular reading scales can help familiarize new users with the FastBridge reading assessment scales. The programs/scales available in the report—are accessible via the column labeled “Read. Program”—include:
- MAP RIT
- LEXILE®
- FALL ESTIMATED GRADE LEVEL
- SPRING ESTIMATED GRADE LEVEL
- READING RECOVERY
- FOUNTAS & PINNELL GUIDED READING
- DRA
- BASAL
- ATOS
- ATOS L
These options were selected based on common reading metrics used in U.S. schools. The following table provides summaries of each available option.
Reading metric |
Summary |
MAP RIT1 |
This is the score provided for the Measures of Academic Progress in Reading published by the Northwest Evaluation Association. The RIT scores in the s2i reading report are derived through a linear transformation of aReading scores to the RIT scale score. |
LEXILE® |
This score represents the student’s reading ability on the Lexile® scale published by MetaMetrics2. |
FALL ESTIMATED READING LEVEL1 |
This score is an estimated developmental grade level in the fall for a given earlyReading composite score or aReading scaled score. |
SPRING ESTIMATED READING LEVEL1 |
This score is an estimated developmental grade level in the spring for a given earlyReading composite score or aReading scaled score. |
READING RECOVERY1 |
An Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement is a measure that the Reading Recovery system uses to indicate student progress. The Reading Recovery scores in the s2i reading report were estimated from published crosswalks of the reading levels with national reading norms. |
FOUNTAS AND PINNELL GUIDED READING1 |
This score is based on the Fountas and Pinnell Text Level Gradient metric, which assigns a letter to indicate what level of text to use for reading instruction. The Fountas and Pinnell Guided Reading scores in the s2i reading report were estimated from published crosswalks of the reading levels with national reading norms. |
DRA1 |
This score is based on the Developmental Reading Assessment, Second Edition published by Pearson. This is the version of the DRA that was available when the FastBridge assessments were developed. The DRA–2 scores in the s2i reading report were estimated from crosswalks of the reading levels with national reading norms. |
BASAL1 |
This score is based on reading programs that use texts written to teach reading with sequentially more difficult texts. The scores in the s2i reading report were estimated from published data about the scores used in published basal reading programs. |
ATOS1 |
This score is a measure of text readability used with products published by Renaissance Learning. It reports results on a grade level equivalent (i.e., grade and month) scale to indicate the text complexity level that a student at that reading comprehension performance level would likely comprehend. The scores in the s2i reading report were estimated from the alignment of national reading norm grade equivalents with the ATOS scale. |
ATOS–L1 |
This is the ATOS zone of proximal development (ZPD) score range centered on the ATOS score |
1 The values reported in the s2i are estimates as they were not derived from direct links to either the aReading scaled score or the earlyReading composite score.
2 The Lexile® scores in the s2i and the data download for students who complete aReading in Grades 2–12 were calculated from an equating study completed for FastBridge by MetaMetrics, the Lexile® publisher. For students in Grades K and 1, the Lexile® value is estimated from the link between the earlyReading composite score and the aReading scaled score. The Lexile® score indicates the complexity of text that a student with the Lexile® score is likely to comprehend.
